A basement slab sits in wet ground. Moisture pushing up through it is the one condition that will defeat any coating on the market — which makes the vapor barrier the whole job down here, not a finishing detail.
Why a basement is not just a garage with lower ceilings.
A garage slab sits above grade with air on both sides. A basement slab is surrounded by soil that holds water, and hydrostatic pressure pushes that moisture upward through the concrete continuously. It does not need a flood or a visible leak. A slab can read dry to the hand and still be driving enough vapor to lift a coating off it within a year or two.
That is why the fourth step matters more here than anywhere else on the list.
How the slab gets prepared
The same four steps as any other floor — but down here the fourth one is the job.
Grind with 30-grit diamonds
The slab gets ground — not acid-etched — to scratch the surface open so the epoxy has something to adhere to. This is the step the hardware-store kit skips.
Vacuum out all the debris
Grinding leaves dust sitting in the profile that was just opened. It comes out before anything is mixed, because resin bonds to concrete, not to what is lying on top of it.
Patch every crack
Cracks get filled rather than coated over, so they do not telegraph back through the finished floor the first time the slab moves.
Lay a vapor barrier
To stop moisture coming up from the ground and ruining the floor over time. Vapor driving up through a slab is the one condition that defeats any coating.
The top layer
Sealed with a polyaspartic topcoat.
The last coat is the one your floor actually lives with — so it’s polyaspartic, to protect against scratches, nicks, and everyday wear and tear.
